Originally meant widen out; expand; archaic character was hand and stick 尹 with snake 虫; also sometimes had dots (perhaps indicating boundaries): probably indicated driving out wild creatures – widening boundaries; may have been cognate to 它 – note reference at 也; it seems that 尹 came to be written in such a way that it was corrupted into 方 (right side is a corruption of 它) |
